Kiawak Ashoona

 

Kiawak was born in September 1933. He began carving in the early 1950’s producing artwork in seclusion, working in a relaxed and unhurried manner. Probably the greatest volume of his artwork and the most significant pieces were produced when he was at an outpost camp. Spiritual figures, shamans, creatures of mythology and storytelling are reoccurring themes of his work.is children. He was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2000. He died in December 2014.
